The British High Commission Nassau is pleased to announce that this year’s Bahamian Chevening Scholar is Shanea Strachan from Freeport, Grand Bahama. Shanea, who was selected from a competitive field, will enroll in Bournemouth University’s MA in Producing Film and Television. Her long-term goal is to return home and become a producer at the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas (ZNS) Northern Service. She is also interested to support re-establishing the Grand Bahama film industry, most known for Disney’s production of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

GRAND Bahama’s Shanea Strachan is this year’s Bahamian Chevening Scholar, the British High Commission in Nassau has announced.

#Selected from a competitive field of candidates, Ms Strachan will travel to the UK to pursue a master’s degree in producing film and television at Bournemouth University.

Shanea Strachan Founder of the Hearty Burrito Charity gave back to Grand Bahama residents during the organization’s first major community giveaway on Saturday (March 30) at the Downtown Freeport parking lot.


Strachan spoke to The Freeport News about the importance of helping the community.

Las Vegas, N.M. – Shanea Strachan, a New Mexico Highlands 2014 media arts alumna and Bahamas native, will be at Highlands Oct. 9 to give a talk titled “Hurricane Dorian: The Road to Recovery.”


The free talk and screening of Strachan’s short documentary film and other visuals about Hurricane Dorian will be from 9 to 10 a.m. in the Lora Shields Building, Room 265, 806 National Ave.

Las Vegas, New Mexico — A Highlands University media arts graduate won first place in a global photography contest for the International Student Voice Magazine.  

Shanea Strachan, a Bahamas native, garnered the international college student award from a pool of 119 photographers with a self-portrait she created for her Photography II class at Highlands. Her photograph was featured in the magazine in August.

Las Vegas, N.M. — New Mexico Highlands University media arts student Shanea Strachan’s book about her spiritual journey following her father’s death was published and released June 4.


Strachan, 21, started writing as a child, with her pieces ranging from poetry to screenplays. When her  father died suddenly in December 2010, the Freeport, Bahamas native turned her attention to an intensely personal story about moving forward after tragedy.

Shanea Abriel Strachan was born and raised in Freeport, Bahamas. A writer since childhood, she has been writing poetry, short stories, songs and even screenplays for over a decade. 

Shanea graduated St. Georges High School in 2008, leaving the Bahamas to attend college in the United States. She obtained her Associates of Arts Degree from Northeast Community College in Norfolk, Nebraska and is now obtaining a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Media Arts from New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico.

Las Vegas, N.M. — New Mexico Highlands University media arts student Shanea Strachan wrote and produced a video public service announcement for Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April that promotes the university’s Campus Violence Prevention Program.

Strachan, 20, a native of  the Bahamas, who transferred to Highlands this year to study filmmaking in the Media Arts Department
